1. LECTURES
Lecture week 9 :
After we have completed our task 2, we were introduced to our next task, type design and communication. We were assigned to make 9 sketches of our own fonts using three different markers, brush pen, calligraphy marker, and normal marker (three sketches of each markers). After we're finish with our sketch, we can then show them to Mr. Max for him to pick which fonts to finalize to proceed on our next step.

Lecture week 10 :
After given one week to come up with 9 different sketches from all the three markers, we can then show all 9 design to Mr. Max for the finalization. After He have picked the final design, we can proceed to digitize our font in Adobe Illustrator

Lecture week 11 :
The words we were told to sketch from week 9 was only "HODG". After Mr. Max have chosen the design, we needed to continue our sketch for the remaining alphabets wanted. Once we were done, we were to shown him again for Mr. Max to approve whether we were able to continue with our work and start digitizing all the other alphabets.

Lecture week 12 :
On our last week of task 3, we were instructed to download FontLab 8 free trial. During this class, Mr. Max continue to receive work progress of the complete alphabet for finalization, some have even finished with their digitizing. Once done with digitizing, we showed it to Mr. Max for the approval to proceed with copy pasting our design to FontLab 8. We were also shown step by step on the setting that must be done before putting in our font, and also create spaces between words of our own font.

2. INSTRUCIONS

3. PROCESS WORK

3.1 Research

3.2 Ideation

Sketches :

Digitization :

Before creating the lines for measurements, I used an example through the font in Illustrator. I then started to use it as a guide and for accuracy of each heights of my font design.

FontLab :

Before moving our font design to FontLab, I changed my strokes to expand appearance and also merge them together.

We also had to count our font design height in pt before setting it in FontLab. I used the red box as my guide and bring it up and down and also the info tab for its measurments.

Once done measuring in Illustrator, we change our ascender and descender, and also the units per em if your artboard is no longer 1000. We also had to set other things like the paste and duplicate in the preference.

After we have put all our font to font lab, we then type it out and adjust the metrics using the guide given in Teams.

After we finished wit the Metrics, we use the kerning tool to kern word to word in order for a nice spacing between each words.

4. FEEDBACK

Week 9 :
General feedback : Briefed on our new task : Type design & communication (create 3 font design of three different pens)
Specific feedback : -

Week 10 :
General feedback : Feedbacks on font design sketches
Personal feedback : Three of my sketches were approved. I was allowed to pick from the three chosen and can also proceed with digitizing

Week 11 :
General feedback : Feedbacks on sketches and feedbacks on digitized design
Personal feedback : All the other alphabets were approved, can continue to finish digitizing my font

Week 12 :
General feedback : Download FontLab 8 and finalize the rest of the alphabet. setting Fotlab to the exact height (pt) from Illustrator, and start copy and pasting your font in FontLab 8.
Personal feedback : Thicken the strokes in "c, e, s' and change a little on the "e", since it looks too similar to "c"

Week 13 : Finish our task 3 by the end of the week and start on the given task 4 : Final compilation

5. REFLECTION

Experience :
In the process of digitizing our font design, Mr. Max showed us a short cut tools for us to make it easier when making our font. For that reason, Creating my curvy font in Adobe was a lot more faster and easier.

Observations :
In digitizing my font, I was focused on making the stroke similar to all the other alphabet, and also the beginning curve and the ending curve.

Findings :
Although at first this may look very tricky and take a lot of time, but doing all of this with the instructions and short cuts given my Mr. Max indeed made everything a lot more easier and also a lot more faster.

FURTHER READING :

Section 4
Type in graphic design. like written and verbal communications, involves analysis, planning, organization, and ultimately problem-solving. when writing or speaking, we intuitively choose the words to use and how we use them together to effectively communicated our message. With type, the same end result can be achieved ; however, graphic designer needs to be as intuitive.

LETTER SPACING
Spacing is an essential and critical consideration when designing with type. Proper and appropriate spacing not only affects the  legibility and readability of type, but, more importantly, the overall meaning of any visual communication that uses type as its primary communicative element.
Specific criteria for evaluating and determining proper and effective spacing for letters, words and lines of text is achieved with methods such as, letter spacing, kerning, word spacing and line spacing.

Letter spacing

Letter spacing is the adjustable space located between letters, which is adjusted unilaterally rather than individually to achieve an even density to a type setting.
The scale / size of type is a critical factor to be considered when making adjustments to letterspacing.
Smaller text sizes tends to lose clarity and visual distinction and therefore may need increased letter spacing to optimize readability. Larger sizes may need decreased letter spacing to bring uniformity and visual cohesiveness to the setting.

Kerning

Kerning is the adjustment of horizontal space located between one or more pairs of individual characters. Kerning allows for individual reduction or incremental increase to letter spacing ; tracking increases / reduces spaces between words.

Word spacing

Word spacing in defined as the space located between words, ideally equivalent to the width of a lowercase in most small-scale, text settings. With larger-scale display type settings, word spacing can be adjusted manually to achieve optimum visual results.

line spacing

Line spacing, also known as leading, is the adjustable vertical space located between lines of type, specified as a measurement in points from baseline to baseline. Leading is a term that originated from hot metal printing, when strips of lead were placed between lines of type to provide sufficient spacing.
