2. INSTRUCTIONS

Assignment Requirements

  • Comic Cover: Design a cover that represents your interpretation of The Monkey’s Paw, including an illustrated masthead created in Illustrator. You may use Photoshop to manipulate textures and images for a surreal effect inspired by Sandman covers or refer to “surrealistic adobe illustrator artwork” Include subtle animations if desired to create a haunting atmosphere.
  • One-Page Comic: Translate a selected part of the story into a single-page, animated webcomic with at least 3 panels animated using GIFs in Google Slides. Focus on panel-to-panel transitions (e.g., moment-to-moment, action-to-action, subject-to-subject) to maintain suspense and continuity.
  • Format: Portrait orientation for phone or tablet display. Assemble all elements in Google Slides for presentation

3. PROCESS WORK

3.1 Research :

3.2 Ideation :

Comic sketch :

First sketch

Second sketch

Third sketch

Fourth sketch

Poster sketch :

Digitization :

On my first digitization, as you can see, I rely too much on the pen tool which was not that flexible at all. However, after I discovered the brush tool, I started using that for my outline.

After I have finalized my comic, I continued to start animating it. As we were instructed to animate 3 panels, I chose 2 text and 1 light flickering. I started by copy and pasting them multiple times in a new artboard.

For my comic cover, I went on with the idea of a spotlight to show the Monkey's paw, and make the others a silhouette.

4. FEEDBACK

Week 11 :
General feedback : -
Personal feedback : -

Week 12 :
General feedback : -
Personal feedback : My sketch was fine but there's too much going on in one page. Also, try to only do 60 % of what I have sketch and pick certain panels to develop and get rid of.

Week 13 :
General feedback : Do not add to many panels for a one page comic. when picking scene from the story, try creating a sketch using the reference like a scene to scene or action to action and more other.
Personal feedback : Reduce my panels and shorten the scene of the story I pick. I chose a certain parts of the story but resulting in making many jumps in the comic sketch.

Week 14 :
General feedback : -
Personal feedback : -

Week 15 :

General feedback :
Personal feedback : For the comic cover with the silhouettes ideas was fine. My sketch progress on the other hand could have improved the composition better with the reference in framed ink as a compositional guide.

5. REFLECTION

Experience :
During the whole process of working on this project, I have learned many things. During the very beginning of this task, I was very clueless on how to transfer my sketch digitally. I realize so much on the pen tool that IT confuses me even more. But after talking with my friend, I started to know the use of brush in AI, especially that you can also make it look like a sketch. For the animation part, it was surprisingly easy and entertaining. I thought I had fully forgotten how to import files to make an animation in Photoshop. But it turns out that I remember it clearly.

Observations :
It is always surprising to me that we tend to think that a task may be easier than we have imagined. I would fully say that this task was simple, however, after much thought, the feedbacks Mr. Hafiz always remind us in showing our progression truly helps. I learned that its better to do things little by little with much time then rushing things all at once.

Findings :
From everything I have mentioned on the above, I really did enjoy this task, I did rush doing this and therefore, i want to take it as a habit I should gradually get rid of. Having to work thigs on a calmer pace is far better than starting on a projects when the due date is near. Overall, This subject truly have taught me many things.
