Why I made this design?
Looking back at the artist of my chosen poster, I took the idea of using a real life image of a picture I had sitting in my gallery. Originally, it was just a shop standing on the corner of a village, however, I really liked the idea of getting to capture both angles at once. As we had to apply design principles to this design, I wanted to put feelings to it through picturing how time can fly very fast. As this idea pops into my head, I tried to work on how I can make a "contrast" / difference in picturing "then" and "now".
The meaning!
As you can see through the color difference in 2016 and 2026, I tried picturing how the "little us" often see things around us with bright and only happy things, however, as we grow up, we realize that there are so many more things to understand and work hard on, and how living is not always about happy memories. The idea of placing the old version and now version of the person is a way to portray how younger us would want to grow up quickly, and on the other hand, the older version of ourselves reminisces and misses the old memories. Placing them side by side was to catch the emotion and realize how time went by quickly, leaving many memories behind and constantly creating new ones.
1. What have I learnt in this module?
From this Module, I have learned that there is so much to look into and understand about within a design portrait. After going through all the design principle and how it applies in actual posters, I was able to observe and ideate things more creatively
2. What did I enjoy the most?
I personally enjoyed explaining the reason behind why I chose Maria Sisul as the artist of the painting I chose. Getting to really enjoy her You Tube videos and daily life's painting things, I really like the idea of recreating / painting things from things she captured before. Apart from this, I also really enjoyed refining and developing my design digitally. As I never really had the experience in illustrating drawings digitally, this was something fun and helpful. I learned a lot while doing this part in this project.
3. What did I not enjoy the most?
Personally, I did not really enjoy the sketching part. Perhaps I was also rushing with time, but I was not very satisfied with the rough sketch I showed. Although I eventually develop it better, I would have done a better one next time. From this, I learn that creating / coming up with ideas takes time, with this, we may receive a better result in the end.
4. What have I learnt about myself through this module?
As I mentioned how illustrating online wasn't something I was used to, I learned how I was actually looking forward to try learning new things on my own. For example, although we have used Adobe Illustrator for a year now, there are still many things that confuses me when using their tools. Therefore, there were a couple time where I had to search it up and understand and learn it on my own.
5. What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?
Talking about the changes I've made to my learning journey, one thing for sure was applying a clear background and approach to my design. Perhaps after learning the design principles, coming up with sketches, and refining them, I was able to work on it progressively within the 7 weeks given. As we were given a clear action we must start within a specific week, I learned how structuring your work timeline is very crucial to your future progress as well. On the other hand, certain things still needs more attention to be better on, for example like my time management when working on any tasks in general.
6. What are my aspirations
As university, friends, assignments, and more others are ways where we can gain experience and understanding, one clear ambition I want to achieve is to be discipline with myself. I want to learn and appreciate time more deep, starting to work on things quickly, filling in spaces with productivity, as well as taking my observations and experience to later be seen as a great lesson to learn from.
